What We Believe

We believe Jesus is God’s Son, the Bible is God’s Word, Salvation is a free gift from God, and the Holy Spirit as God in us.

New Colony Baptist Church was founded in 1965. Being Baptist means we have no hierarchy over the church to dictate what the church does or does not do. As a Baptist Church we are autonomous in our partnerships and relationships to other groups. The people of New Colony strongly believe in working together to share the gospel locally, nationally and internationally. Our church maintains a connection with the Greater Boston Baptist Association, the Baptist Convention of New England and The Southern Baptist Convention (SBC). We also support a couple currently doing medical missions at Tenwek Hospital in Kenya through World Gospel Mission. It is through these partnerships our church is able to support local, state, national and International mission efforts. We also support campus ministry at Umass Lowell, youth ministry across New England, Boston International Ministries led by Michael Dean reaching graduate, doctoral and post doctoral professionals at universities in Boston, disaster relief, hunger relief, seminaries, the work of thousands of missionaries across the globe, and many other ministries.

We believe Jesus is God’s Son, the Bible is God’s Word, Salvation is a free gift from God, and the Holy Spirit as God in Us. The Bible is the only authority in teaching us what it means to be a community of Christ-followers. Our desire and purpose is to help people come to a personal relationship with Jesus Christ, to live a life that is faithful to God’s word and empowered by God’s Spirit as we seek to live out loud our faith in order to be the people of God in our community.

We desire to be a positive influence to help others come to personally know Jesus Christ as Savior and as Lord. Salvation is a free gift given by a loving God to all who trust in Jesus Christ as Savior and Lord. The Holy Spirit gives us the power to live faithfully as God’s people; the church.

The following is a summary of our beliefs:

God

God is the Creator and Ruler of the universe. He is revealed to us in three persons: Father, Son, and Spirit. It is a mystery, but we say God is triune; three in one, co-equally God.

You

You are made in the image of God and are loved by Him. You are the object of God’s creation and love. Although you have tremendous potential for good, you are marred by distrust towards God called “sin.” Your distrust keeps you away from God, even though God has already restored you by grace through the redemptive work of Christ. You must only love and trust Him.

Genesis 1:27 || Psalms 8:3-6 || Isaiah 53:6 || Romans 3:23 || Isaiah 59: 1-2

Jesus Christ

Jesus Christ is God incarnate; God, the Son, fully God. He is also the Son of Man, fully human. Jesus of Nazareth lived a sin-free life and demonstrated God’s love perfectly through His life, death on the cross and resurrection from the grave.

Isaiah 9:6 || John 1:1-5; 14:10-30 || Hebrews 4:14-15 || 1 Corinthians 15: 3-4

Salvation

Salvation is a gift from God to all who believe. We can not earn God’s grace and forgiveness. We simply ask Jesus to forgive our sin and come into our life as Savior and Lord. Jesus waits for this invitation to bring his salvation and new life to us. Jesus does not force anyone to trust Him. We look to Jesus to forgive our sin and adopt us into God’s forever family. Salvation is a free gift. It is a decision each person must make for themselves when they are old enough to understand what God has done for them through Jesus Christ. We must accept His love by faith and love and worship Him. He promises to “save” those who call out to Him. Jesus’ death on the Cross was the work of redemption and we must simply trust Christ’s work of salvation. We believe that baptism and the Lord’s Supper are pictures of our salvation, symbolic to us, and not to be regarded as the means of salvation or grace.

The Holy Spirit

The Holy Spirit is equal with the Father and the Son as God. He is present in the world to make people aware of their need for Jesus Christ. He comes to live in every Christian from the moment of trusting Jesus Christ as Savior and Lord. We believe that the work of the Holy Spirit is to glorify the Lord Jesus Christ and to help us live fruitful spiritual lives of faith. The Holy Spirit convicts us of sin, regenerates us and lives within us to give direction, to teach, empower us to serve Christ, produce good fruit in our lives and equip us to serve others.

Eternity

Humans were created to live forever. We will either live with God or without God. Jesus came to make a way for every person to be forgiven of sin and adopted into God’s family. Those who trust Jesus Christ as their Savior and Lord will spend eternity with God in heaven. Those who do not choose Christ will be eternally without God is Hell. Your eternity has already started and you are making the choice.

The Bible

The Bible is God’s Word to all people. It was written by human authors under the supernatural guidance of the Holy Spirit. It is the final authority of truth for Christian beliefs and living. The Bible has God for its author. The Bible reveals our need to trust Jesus Christ for salvation through faith alone. Because it is inspired by God, it is truth without error.

The Church

We believe that the true Church is composed of all such persons who, through saving faith in Jesus Christ, have been regenerated by the Holy Spirit and are united together in the body of Christ. Those who know Christ as Savior are then baptized as a witness or testimony of their faith in Christ and the new life that Jesus gives those who trust in Him. Jesus Christ is the head of the church.

We also believe that each believer is in direct relation with God through Jesus Christ. Therefore there is no need for any religious entity or hierarchy as an intermediary between God and man. Each person can personally relate to God through Jesus Christ. This makes us all priests before God.
